Ep. 12 | Lei Lei Lashawn: Creating Art to Heal Trauma and Fight Injustice
"You have to deal with it to heal."
Episode 12
In this episode, I talk to Lei Lei Lashawn, award-winning Dallas-based artist.
She shares how childhood trauma and the loss of her brother shaped her journey, turning pain into purpose through art, activism, and community care. From mental health and grief to environmental racism and protest, this conversation shows how creativity can become both a lifeline and a force for social change.
Here’s Lei Lei sharing an important moment in her life where she stood up to EPA officials bullying her at a Dallas environmental event, and how we can stand up to bullies on our own.
Thank you, Lei Lei!
Extremely important announcement
It’s been fun, but this episode marks the last one of my podcast.
Well, kind of.
I think it’s more fair to say that I will no longer be releasing episodes on a regular basis.
For the past year, I’ve had so much fun doing something completely outside of my comfort zone: booking guests, recording, editing, and most importantly, posting clips on fucking TikTok. My goal was to release one episode per month for a year, then see how I felt afterwards. I’m proud to have done that, and I’m even more proud of the diverse set of guests I was able to book. They were gracious enough to accept the invitation, and dropped wisdom on me and us that I will forever be grateful for. I plan to write a post about my Dirty Dozen — the first 12 guests on this show — and what we can glean from them. And as always, expect me to dive deep into some data that I’ve collected from their wisdom.
But for now, I’ll be taking a break from my podcast, and I don’t know for how long. I’ve enjoyed the process and guests immensely, but it’s a lot of work. From now on, I will probably still record but I won’t be dead set on releasing an episode each month. We’ll see.
Or maybe I’ll just grow restless and you’ll see the next episode in August.
